You should have known
Words have consequences
Before you decided to impose
That someone was a liar
But you didn’t
You should have known
Words leave wounds
Deeper than a knife can cut
Before you made fun of him
But you didn’t
You should have known
Words echo in hallways
louder than a shattering glass
Before you yelled at him
But you didn’t
You should have known
Words can be played with
More than keys of a piano
Before you left him hanging
But you didn’t
You should have known
Words are hauntingly more
Louder than mocking laughter
Before you called him a failure
But you didn’t
You should have known
The weight of the words can
Wound more than a gun shot
Before you called him worthless
But you didn’t …till his heart stopped
Oh so powerful and true too many times.

Well said, Barrira….We need to be careful with what words we use…and never speak in anger. Cheers =)

Oh so sad 😢. Truly well written poem that tugs at the heart strings. There’s a lot of truth in those words. A lot of truth.

The “sticks & stones may break my bones…” idiom? That’s absolute, complete nonsense, isn’t it, when we think of the power of words to heal or hurt.

Totally agreed, ain’t no bigger weapon than words.

Words are something that comes with a tag ‘handle with care’ but it seems to be always invisible for humans. The worse thing about words you can’t take back — once they are out there, they are there for life. I wish we can understand that words come with consequences.
I loved this poem ❤

Indeed, they do. Physical injuries you can keep bandaging seeing the recovery happening till it’s only a memory. Words run deeper and one never know when they will fade, if they ever will.

Oh My! My dear friend, you have won my heart with these profound “words”. Such a powerful message conveyed by your wise, brilliant writing. We should definitely pay much more heed to what we say to the other person. Words can cut much deeper than any physical injury.
A great piece. Hats off, B!

So powerful and cautionary for careless people out there. Smack on their face.
